Dubai Exiles‘ Under 16s coach, DuRandt Gerber, joins UAE National Rugby coach, Apollo Perelini, as assistant coach of the UAE Sevens‘ squad.
DuRandt has played professional rugby in Italy with Gran Parma, L’Aquila, and Lazio and also received international honours with Italy ‘A‘ in the 2011 Churchill Cup against Canada. He has also played Currie Cup Premiership rugby with Griquas.
DuRandt is the current Exiles‘ Premiership rugby side’s number 10 as well as Head Coach of the Dubai Exiles‘ Under 16s, a role that he’s looking forward to continuing for the 2021-22 season.
The UAE Sevens squad’s first training session took place on Saturday evening at The Sevens. Exiles’ representation was further enhanced with Jaen Botes, Epeli Davetawalu, Matt Mills, Carel Thomas, Justin Walsh, Schalk Du Preez, Michael Stubbs, and Robbie Sproul all invited to the initial UAE Sevens training group.
Dubai Exiles coaching staff and players already contribute a lot to the success of UAE International rugby. Exiles‘ Director of Rugby, Jacques Benade, coaches the backs of both the UAE’s Senior and Under 19 15-a-side teams and was instrumental in helping the UAE gain promotion to Asia Rugby Division 1 in 2019 after beating Thailand by 50 points to 12 in Hua Hin.
