It’s all go tomorrow morning at the Surakul Stadium in Phuket, Thailand as the UAE Men’s and Women’s squads kick off against Singapore, Thailand (A & B), Bangladesh and Chinese Taipei.
Four Dubai Exiles have made the trip with the UAE 7s men’s squad which will be captained by Exiles‘ Matt Mills. Three of the Exiles’ Under 19s have been enjoying themselves in the UAE Rugby Premiership with the Exiles this season. Alfie Wilson with brothers Hannes Kruger and Marcus Kruger. The three teenagers from Dubai English Speaking College have enjoyed a dazzling 2021-22 season which included winning the Gulf Under 19 Boys title at the 2021 Emirates Dubai Sevens with DESC, a 12 player squad that included 10 x Dubai Exiles Under 19s.
Also making the trip is UAE Assistant Coach, DuRandt Gerber. DuRandt is in his second season of assisting UAE National Coach, Apollo Perelini. DuRandt has been Dubai Exiles RFC‘s outside half since he arrived in Dubai in 2015. He played professional rugby in Italy for over 10 years, initially with Frascati and Algero before moving to Gran Parma in later season her played for both L’Aquila and Lazio.
DuRandt played for Italy ‘A’ in the 2011 Churchill Cup and was also included in the Italy senior training squad for the 2011 Rugby World Cup which was held in New Zealand. He still laces up his boots in the UAE Premiership for the Exiles and currently coaches the Dubai Exiles’ Under 16s.
Dubai Exiles’ Robyn Etherington
Also making the trip to Phuket are the UAE Women’s 7s squad which includes Dubai Exiles‘ Robyn Etherington. The Dubai based Personal Trainer moved to the Exiles in January 2022 after the Dubai Tigers disbanded their women’s team. Robyn has represented the UAE on the international stage for a number of seasons and will be making a big impact on the Sarakul Stadium pitch this weekend.
The women’s tournament is made up of teams from the United Arab Emirates, Thailand ‘A’ and Thailand ‘B’, Singapore along with ‘The Briars‘ from Australia.
The tournament will be streamed ‘live’ on Asia Rugby‘s YouTube channel.
